Summary

When an apple falls on his head, Newton the squirrel begins to wonder how the world works。 Listening in on a lesson about the force of gravity, he decides to try his own experiments with the help of his sister, Curie。 Learning to make simple machines, they discover that science is for everyone—even squirrels。 And when a birds’ nest falls out of a nearby tree, only Newton and Curie, using their inventions and quick scientific thinking, can save the day!

An elementary and up science book about two squirrels testing theories of physics they see around them。

There's STEAMy goodness here as two cute squirrels attempt to learn about physics through experimentation, AND watching a school science class through a window。 I'm all for book that make learnin' fun, and this is one of them。 There's STEAMy goodness here as two cute squirrels attempt to learn about physics through experimentation, AND watching a school science class through a window。 I'm all for book that make learnin' fun, and this is one of them。 。。。more

A nice addition to any elementary classroom or library for students who are covering basic laws of science。 Any educator could easily incorporate this into their curriculum and make a hands on activity or two for their students to try。

A fun way to introduce kids to simple machines。 The squirrels build a swing to show force/gravity, a seesaw for fulcrum and lever, and a pulley to save a robins’ nest。

3。5 STARS Lots of good stuff here and I recommend it with one reservation。 The two squirrels are (as you probably guessed) named after Sir Isaac Newton and Marie Curie -- Newton is the older brother to Curie。 I was a bit bothered that, for most of the book, Curie seems more interested in dissuading her brother from his scientific exploration so they can go eat or play。 Maybe this is because she's the "little" sibling but I wanted her to live up to her namesake and be a strong female character。 H 3。5 STARS Lots of good stuff here and I recommend it with one reservation。 The two squirrels are (as you probably guessed) named after Sir Isaac Newton and Marie Curie -- Newton is the older brother to Curie。 I was a bit bothered that, for most of the book, Curie seems more interested in dissuading her brother from his scientific exploration so they can go eat or play。 Maybe this is because she's the "little" sibling but I wanted her to live up to her namesake and be a strong female character。 However, by the end, both Newton and Curie work together on a project to help some friends in need。 The story is engaging enough and does a decent job of weaving in concepts about simple machines and both my five-year-old and eight-year-old enjoyed it。 The back matter is good, including an Author's Note with info on the real Newton and Curie, as well as further details about physics, experiments, matter and energy。 It includes a Glossary and a Learn More! section with websites to explore。 I would recommend this along with a book like Simple Machines。 。。。more

Daniel Kirk, please keep writing。 This was such an amazing book that shows how fun and useful it is to learn science。 This is a book that I want even my older children and teens to read, because it explains such important science principles in a useful way。 Can't wait to see more books by you! 2。5。 The info on simple machines is decent, but I was put off by the squirrel that’s named for Marie Curie, a brilliant scientist, being more interested in eating and playing。 It’s not until near the end of the book that she actually engages in scientific thinking at all, leaving it mostly to her brother to run the experiments。

November 2020 - a cute incorporation of experiments and simple machines into a story。

Newton and his little sister Curie explore the world around them through science, and learn about simple machines and how they are used for play and work。 This book has a glossary with several useful terms, and a short biography on Sir Isaac Newton, and Marie Curie。

I love picture books that are able to incorporate math and science principles in a way that helps children grasp these important principles and make them seem accessible and natural。 This is an excellent look at simple machines and the physics principles that explain how they work。 You'll have children wanting to build their own swings, pulleys, levers, and slides by the end。 I love picture books that are able to incorporate math and science principles in a way that helps children grasp these important principles and make them seem accessible and natural。 This is an excellent look at simple machines and the physics principles that explain how they work。 You'll have children wanting to build their own swings, pulleys, levers, and slides by the end。 。。。more

Great introduction to science related topics for young readers。 Gives resources and websites in the end for kids to look up more science information。 Teaches kids about helping others。 And also tells a basic introduction about the real life Newton and Curie。

I love this book, and so does my inquisitive 1st grader。 He’s asked me to read it to him 3-4 times since we got it a few days ago。 My only criticism is I wish Curie seemed as smart and focused as Newton。 Or, perhaps they could have each had their moments od preferring to play over talking about science?

This book could be used if you want something that talks about simple machines, but my library has this cataloged in with the picture books。 For having characters named after Newton and Curie the female squirrel spends most of the book in stereotypically feminine pink and encouraging the boy squirrel to not think about science because eating and playing are more important to her。

Simple machines explanations。
